at Calakmul
is located outside the ceremonial precinct
of the large pyramid temples. The visitor may find it to the west in an extensive plaza bounded by range-style buildings and smaller pyramid temples, perhaps of earlier dynastic significance. With 152 large stelae, Calakmul leads all Maya cities in these highly sculptured stones that depict bas-relief royal figures and myriad hieroglyphs.
