II is the highest point at Calakmul although it is not the tallest
pyramid temple. From this vista point, 180 degrees around, the ancient Maya of Calakmul could have seen the portal fires on El Tigre pyramid at El Mirador, the great Preclassic power just 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the south-southwest.From this vantage the vistor can behold the great unbroken forests of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve of Mexico and the Maya Biosphere Reserve of Guatemala.
