The
Mission Church at Mopilá was
destroyed and left in ruins during the War of the Castes of 1846-48. In the mid-1990s, it was partially restored by Logan Wagner from the University of Texas. In this view you may glimpse people standing atop the barrel-vault above the nave. You may reach this vantage with caution by a narrow, steep, and rail-less stone stairway. From this height a great expanse of Yucatan countryside stretches to infinity, marked by the distant, high façade of the church at Yaxcabá.
